SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (Oct. 9, 2010) - The Wheaton College women's tennis team cruised to an 8-1 triumph over Mount Holyoke College this afternoon at the Mount Holyoke Tennis Courts. With the win, Wheaton improved to 6-0 versus New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foes this year.
Catherine Teague, Sarah Geocaris, Lyndsay Cooke and Madison Hartley each prevailed at both singles and doubles to lead the way.
The guests took two of the three doubles matches to gain the early edge. Geocaris and Teague teamed up for an 8-0 win at the number one spot, while Cooke and Hartley came out on top 8-4 in their number two contest. Mount Holyoke's lone point of the day came from senior Elise Marifian and first year Maya Sayarath, who picked up an 8-4 win at the number three position. It was the tandem's fourth victory of the fall.
Wheaton then swept the six doubles matches to put things away. From top to bottom, the lineup included Teague, Geocaris, Cooke, junior Allesandra DiOrio, Hartley and senior Ellen Van Faasen. All six players won in straight sets.
Mount Holyoke (2-6, 2-4 NEWMAC) will wrap up its NEWMAC slate on Tuesday, when it visits Springfield College at 4:00 p.m. Meanwhile, Wheaton (8-1, 6-0 NEWMAC) will entertain Colby College tomorrow at 11:00 a.m.
