CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (Oct. 2, 2010) – After taking all three doubles matches, the MIT women's tennis team held on for a 7-2 victory over New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe Mount Holyoke College this afternoon at the duPont Tennis Courts.
The Engineers were paced by first years Lauren Quisenberry, Julia Hsu and Katie O'Neal, who each posted wins at both singles and doubles.
Quisenberry and Hsu got things going with an 8-2 victory at number one doubles. MIT then added 8-5 victories at both second and third doubles to complete the sweep. O'Neal and senior Melissa Diskin played at number two, while senior Jenny Dohlman and junior Hillary Jenny occupied the third slot.
The Engineers (4-1, 4-0 NEWMAC) prevailed in four of the six singles matches to close things out. Quisenberry, Hsu and O'Neal cruised to straight sets wins at the numbers one through three positions, respectively. Meanwhile, senior Jen Rees came from behind to defeat first year AnnElizabeth Konkel 4-6, 6-2, 10-1 in her number six contest.
Mount Holyoke's points came from first year Maya Sayarath and junior Sarah Moore. Sayarath secured her fourth consecutive singles triumph, winning by a score of 6-3, 6-3 at the number four slot. Meanwhile, Moore rolled to a 6-3, 6-1 win at the number five position. It was her second straight victory.
Mount Holyoke (1-5, 1-3 NEWMAC) will return to action on Tuesday, when it hosts Clark University for a league tilt beginning at 4:00 p.m.
