Third-seeded Wellesley bounces sixth-seeded tennis out of NEWMAC playoffs

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- The sixth-seeded Mount Holyoke College tennis team saw its season conclude Tuesday with a 5-0 loss at third-seeded Wellesley College in the first round of the NEWMAC Women's Tennis Championship on Tuesday, in the Lyons' 17th consecutive postseason appearance.

The Lyons finish the year with a 7-9 record overall, while Wellesley (8-8) moves on to the conference semifinals against second-seeded MIT.

Cristiana DeAgazio and Jennifer Fan earned the first point for Wellesley, winning 8-0 against Lyons first-years Kennedy Bagley-Fortner (Montclair, N.J.) and Kate Vavra (Weston, Mass.).

The Blue increased its lead to 2-0 when Isabella DeAgazio and Emilee Pak collected an 8-1 win against senior captain Shweta Kiran Cavale (Chennai, India) and first year Cal Smith (Bridgewater, Mass.).

Wellesley's No. 1 doubles pairing of Annissa Mu and Melinda Alviar completed the 3-0 sweep of doubles for Wellesley with an 8-1 victory over sophomore captain Annika Chai (London, England) and first-year Jaskirat Kaur (Mohali, India).

With four singles matches still in progress, Wellesley closed out the match with victories at No. 4 and 5 singles from Cristiana DeAgazio and Pak. Pak won a flawless 6-0, 6-0 match versus Vavra while DeAgazio earned a 6-1, 6-1 win over Smith.
