Tennis rolls to 9-0 win over Salve Regina in home opener

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- The Mount Holyoke College tennis team evened its fall season record at 1-1 with a convincing 9-0 non-conference victory over Salve Regina University on Friday at the MHC Tennis Courts, as the Lyons swept doubles play and won five out of six singles matches in straight sets.

Salve Regina dropped to 2-5 this season.

Mount Holyoke's top doubles team, sophomore Annika Chai (London, England) and first-year Jaskirat Kaur (Mohali, India), defeated Salve duo Elena Murdock and Sadie Rieg 8-1 at No. 1 singles, after their teammates at second and third doubles had already prevailed by the same scores in their matches. First-year Kennedy Bagley-Fortner (Montclair, N.J.) and first-year Kate Vavra (Weston, Mass.) defeated Cayloa Dolan and Natalie Barros 8-1 at No. 3 doubles to give Mount Holyoke the early lead; first-year Cal Smith (Bridgewater, Mass.) and senior captain Shweta Kiran Cavale (Chennai, India) won by the same count at No. 2 doubles over Sloane Nelson and Ellysa Tancrede.

Chai maintained a perfect individual record in head-to-head competition by defeating Murdock 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. Also winning in straight sets in singles play were Kaur at No. 2, Kiran Cavale at No. 3, Smith at No. 4, and Bagley-Fortner at No. 6. Vavra finished off the evening by prevailing over Barros in a tiebreaker at No. 5 singles.

Mount Holyoke will next compete Wednesday at 3:30pm at Simmons University.
