Tennis wins 9-0 at Simmons

BOSTON -- The Mount Holyoke College tennis team rolled to a 9-0 victory at Simmons University on Friday afternoon, in the Lyons' final non-conference match of the season.

Mount Holyoke (6-8, 3-4 NEWMAC) will conclude the regular season at home tomorrow at 12pm against Emerson (4-13, 1-6 NEWMAC).

The Lyons swept the Sharks (8-9) in the doubles round, surrendering only two points combined over three matches. Sophomore captain Annika Chai (London, England) and first-year Jaskirat Kaur (Mohali, India) beat Libby Weed and Avery Halloran 8-1 at No. 1 singles and concluded their day early, sitting out the singles round. Senior captain Shweta Kiran Cavale (Chennai, India) and first-year Cal Smith (Bridgewater, Mass.) also won by an 8-1 score at No. 2 doubles, over Annabelle Halloran and Samantha Margolin. First-year pair Kate Vavra (Weston, Mass.) and Kennedy Bagley-Fortner (Montclair, N.J.) meanwhile shut out Sara Fucillo and Julia Perconti 8-0.

Cavale assumed the No. 1 spot in singles for Mount Holyoke and defeated Weed 6-0, 6-2. Smith moved up to No. 2 singles and outlasted Annabelle Halloran in a tiebreaker, while Vavra routed Avery Halloran 6-0, 6-1 at third singles. At fourth singles, Bagley-Fortner put away Margolin 7-5, 6-0.

First-year Shanden Plyler (Norwood, N.C.) registered the first singles win of the afternoon, defeating Perconti 6-2, 6-0 to raise her record to 2-0 this year at No. 6 singles. Sophomore Katie Rha (Douglaston, N.Y.) closed out the match with a 4-6, 6-3, 12-10 victory over Emily Lopez at No. 5 singles, raising her record to 2-1 in varsity singles action this season.
