No. 18 Babson stays unbeaten with win over tennis

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- No. 18 nationally ranked Babson College rose to 12-0 on the season with a 9-0 victory over the Mount Holyoke College tennis team in a NEWMAC match on Friday, with temperatures above 90 degrees on the MHC Tennis Courts.

Mariana Campos and Kamila Stasiowska began the visiting Beavers' sweep through doubles play with an 8-1 win over Mount Holyoke first-year duo Kate Vavra (Weston, Mass.) and Kennedy Bagley-Fortner (Montclair, N.J.) at the No. 3 position, dipping their record together to 6-8. Elena Keitt and Adele Fernandez followed with an 8-1 win over senior captain Shweta Kiran Cavale (Chennai, India) and first-year Cal Smith (Bridgewater, Mass.) at second doubles, and Olivia Soffer and Matia Cristiani wrapped up an 8-1 win at first doubles over Mount Holyoke sophomore captain Annika Chai (London, England) and first-year Jaskirat Kaur (Mohali, India).

Chai saw her individual record at No. 1 singles drop to the .500 mark at 9-9, with a 6-2, 6-0 loss to Soffer. Meanwhile Kaur fell 6-1, 6-2 against Cristiani, falling to 7-9 at the No. 2 singles position.

Cavale lost 6-0, 6-1 to Stasiowska, dipping to 6-6 on the year at No. 3 singles. At No. 4, Smith fell to Keitt 6-0, 6-0; Campos defeated Vavra 6-1, 6-0 at fifth singles; and Bagley-Fortner fell 6-0, 6-1 to Fernandez at No. 6.

The Lyons (5-7, 2-4 NEWMAC) will host Springfield College next Friday, April 18, at 4:30pm in conference play.
