SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- Mount Holyoke College nearly pulled off an upset against visiting Springfield College, but the Pride pulled out a 5-4 decision in a NEWMAC women's tennis match Tuesday evening.

Springfield (9-7, 5-3 NEWMAC) took a 2-1 lead in doubles play, thanks to an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles by Taylor Suozzo and Katelyn Rosselli over Mount Holyoke senior captain Shweta Kiran Cavale (Chennai, India) and first-year Cal Smith (Bridgewater, Mass.), followed by an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles by Veronica Fulgieri and Alyssa Elliott over Lyons first-years Kate Vavra (Weston, Mass.) and Kennedy Bagley-Fortner (Montclair, N.J.). Mount Holyoke salvaged a point with an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles by sophomore captain Annika Chai (London, England) and first-year Jaskirat Kaur (Mohali, India) over Springfield's Gabriella Heaney-Secord and Ramida Manataweewat.

The first three singles matches to be decided went Springfield's way, giving the Pride a 5-1 lead and clinching the team victory. But Mount Holyoke was far from done, reeling off three straight singles wins to finish out the match. Chai topped Manataweewat 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, before Vavra and Bagley-Fortner both finished off tiebreaker wins at fifth and sixth singles, respectively, over Rosselli and Kelly McGoldrick.

Springfield got singles wins from Heaney-Secord over Kaur at No. 2; Fulgieri over Cavale at No. 3; and Suozzo over Smith at No. 4, to preserve its fourth straight victory.

Mount Holyoke (5-8, 2-5 NEWMAC) will play at Simmons University on Friday at 4pm.
