Tennis Falls to #13 MIT in NEWMAC Action

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – The Mount Holyoke Tennis team was in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Sunday, facing #13 ranked MIT. The Engineers defeated the Lyons, 9-0 to improve to 11-1 overall and 5-0 in conference play, while MHC falls to 6-9 overall and 3-2 in NEWMAC play.

The Engineers put the pressure on Mount Holyoke early as the duos of senior Elysa Kohrs (Half Moon Bay, Calif./Sacred Heart Prep) and first year Libby Rickeman (Wayzata, Minn./The Blake School), in addition to junior Kelly Zhu (Pearland, Texas/Glenda Dawson) and sophomore Lara Rakocevic (Portland, Ore./Catlin Cabel) both had 8-1 wins from first and third doubles to go up 2-0. Despite a hard-fought effort from MHC sophomore Catherine Peabody (San Francisco, Calif./Lick-Wilmerding HS) and first year Anya Gerasimova (Salem, Ore./West Salem) from second doubles, MIT came out on top with an 8-4 victory to head into singles play up by a 3-0 margin.

Kicking off singles was MIT senior Dora Tzeng with a 6-0, 6-0 win at two. At the bottom of the lineup, sophomore Serena Le (Aiea, Haiwaii/Punahou School) defeated junior Clara Wang (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand), while Kohrs sealed the match with MIT's fifth point after a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Huang at the top of the lineup.

Action continued from third singles as Zhang defeated Peabody 6-2, 6-1, followed by Gerasimova battling at number four singles, but eventually falling 6-4, 7-5 to first year Megan Guenther (Willowbrook, Ill./Hinsdale Central) to finish the match, winning 9-0.

Both teams are set to host NEWMAC action on Tuesday as MIT faces #33 Wellesley at 4:00pm, and Mount Holyoke will matchup with Clark at 4:30pm.
