Tennis Concludes Day 1 of NEWITT Tournament

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. - Day one of the 2017 NEWITT Tournament has concluded and the Mount Holyoke College tennis team saw a number of solid efforts on the afternoon, paced by junior Madison Rosen, who advanced to the quarterfinals in the C Draw.

Rosen (Portland, Ore./Grant) played mixed doubles with MIT sophomore Serena Le. The pair combined for an 8-0 win against Mount Holyoke's duo of junior Clara Wang (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) and senior Katherine Schumacher (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Charles W. Baker). The two pairs then squared-off for singles action as Le defeated Wang, 6-0, 6-0, while Schumacher earned a 1-1 win by retirement against Rosen. With wins in two of the three matches, Rosen and Le advance to the quarterfinals on Saturday. The duo will face off against the winner of the match between Wheaton's Swainston/Paul and Gordon's Jeffreys/Kwok, which will be determined later this afternoon.

The Lyons then saw two pairs compete in the B Draw of the tournament. MHC senior Ishita Tibrewal (Kolkata, India/Modern High School for Girls) and sophomore Ching-Ching Huang (Lukang Township, Taiwan/Taipei Municipal First Girls' HS) faced the Wesleyan duo of Helen Klass-Warch and Zoe Klass-Warch. In doubles, the Cardinals duo posted an 8-2 win over Tibrewal and Huang. Singles action saw Helen Klass-Warch best Huang, 6-1, 6-0, while Tibrewal shouldered a 6-1, 6-0 loss to Zoe Klass-Warch. The pair move to the consolation round and will face the loser of the match between Colby's Nesbitt/Banerjee and Brandeis's Kromchenko/Lehat.

Rounding out the action was MHC sophomore Catherine Peabody (San Francisco, Calif./Lick-Wilmerding) and first year Anya Gerasimova (Salem, Ore./West Salem), who took on MIT's Dora Tzeng and Kelly Zhu. Doubles saw the Engineers duo record an 8-2 win. Peabody then suffered a 6-0, 6-1 loss to Tzeng, while Gerasimova fell to Zhu, 6-3, 6-1. The Lyons duo also moves into the consolation round and faces the loser of the match between Amherst's Burkhart/Park and Trinity's Winer/Aliev on Saturday.

Times for all matches will be determined upon the conclusion of today's matches. Overall action at the tournament begins on Saturday at 9:30am.
