Tennis Takes Third at Seven Sisters Championship

NORTHAMPTON, MASS. – The Mount Holyoke tennis team secured a third place finish on Sunday in the annual 2018 Seven Sisters Championship on Sunday with a pair of strong wins over Bryn Mawr College and Smith College. With the wins, the Lyons finish the weekend with an overall record of 3-3.

Mount Holyoke kicked of the morning with a dominating performance from senior Clara Wang (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) as she picked up a clean 6-0, 6-0 victory over first year Christina Xue (Eddison, N.J./JP Stevens) from the third singles. Sophomore Ching-Ching Huang (Lukand Township, Taiwan/Taipei Municipal First Girls HS) made quick work of Owl's first year Hannah Sherman (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Cedar Rapids George Washington) with a 6-1, 6-3 victory before senior Lizzie Siegle (Hillsborough, Calif./San Mateo) cut the deficit to 2-1, edging senior captain Ishita Tibrewal (Kolkata, India/Modern High School for Girls)7-6, 6-2 heading into doubles action.

The MHC duo comprised of junior Madison Rosen (Portland, Ore./Grant) and classmate Joy Maran (Santa Fe, N.M./Santa Fe Prep) eased its way to an 8-0 victory over seniors Abbygail Brewster (Wichita, Kan./Wichita South) and Jennifer Laske (Bala Cynwyd, Pa./Merion Mercy) to secure the match victory for the Lyons from second singles. Sophomore Catherine Peabody (San Francisco, Calif./Lick-Wilmerding HS) and first year Anya Gerasimova  (Salem, Ore./West Salem) ended the match with an 8-6 victory at first singles to complete the 4-1 victory.

The afternoon match opened up in similar fashion as Peabody took out Smith first year Allison Ahern (Minneapolis, Minn./The Blake School) by a score of 6-0, 6-2 at the top of the singles ladder. Wang then cruised to her second 6-0, 6-0 victory of the day from third singles to give the Lyons a 2-0 advantage. Pioneer senior Samantha Peikes (West Hartford, Conn./Watkinson School) earned a 6-2, 6-3 victory for Smith to make it a 2-1 before doubles play. Huang and Tibrewal teamed up for an 8-0 victory at first doubles to cement the match win, while Maran and senior captain Katherine Schumacher (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Charles W. Baker) followed suit, also earning an 8-0 triumph to earn the Lyons a 4-1 victory.
