Tennis Concludes Spring Trip in Florida

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Mount Holyoke College tennis team concluded its spring trip to Florida with an 8-1 loss to Haverford College on Thursday. The Fords improved to 4-1 with the win, while the Lyons fall to 3-7 on the season.

During the doubles competition, the number one pairing of Emily Shutman and Jane Bary  along with the number three team of Sam Berg and Clara Farrehi both posted 8-4 victories to gain a 2-0 lead in the match. In the middle doubles match, Greta Koch and Julia Gan surrendered six games, but pulled out an 8-6 win to give the Fords a 3-0 lead heading into singles play.

Haverford continued its strong play with five straight singles victories. Julia Gan at number one singles and Clara Farrehi at number five both won by identical 6-3, 6-1 scores, sealing the victory after pushing the score to 5-0. Farrehi had a strong performance from the four spot with a 6-0, 6-0 win, followed by Berg, who pulled out a 6-4, 6-1 victory at the bottom of the lineup.

Sophomore Catherine Peabody (San Francisco, Calif./Lick Wilmerding HS) gave Mount Holyoke its only victory in a 10-point tiebreak. Greta Koch had an early set advantage when she won 7-5. Peabody went on to earn a 6-4 second set win before cruising to a 10-point tiebreak to win the match.

Haverford will return to competition on Saturday, March 24 for the start of Centennial Conference play against McDaniel at 12pm. Mount Holyoke will have one more road match on Saturday, March 31st against Emerson, before returning home against Wheaton on April 3rd.
