SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- Mount Holyoke College downed Eastern Connecticut State University 1-0 in the first women's soccer game between the schools on Friday night at the MHC Soccer Field, as the Lyons got the game-winning goal from junior Hannah Keochakian and some clutch saves by sophomore Clarissa Govea.

Keochakian (Amherst, Mass.), Mount Holyoke's leading scorer last season with seven goals, took a leading pass into the box from sophomore midfielder Anna Kennedy (Glendale, Wis.) and flicked a shot that was partially deflected by ECSU goalie Emily Wallace but found the right side of the net for a 1-0 lead in the game's 60th minute.

Mount Holyoke (1-0) and ECSU (0-1) played the majority of the game in the middle half of the field, with a few scoring opportunities sprinkled in.

The visiting Warriors missed a couple of scoring opportunities in the game, none more so than when Govea stopped Katelyn Herbert on a breakaway, charging out and stopping Herbert's shot between her shins. In the first half, Olivia Mullings narrowly missed wide left when she tried to knock in a cross from a teammate.

Mount Holyoke outshot ECSU by a mere 13-12 margin and had a 3-1 edge in corner kicks. Both Govea (Pico Rivera, Calif.) and Wallace were credited with five saves apiece.

A Little East Conference member, ECSU finished with a 6-6-5 overall record in 2022, while Mount Holyoke, from the NEWMAC, went 2-15-1.

Mount Holyoke will host Massachusetts Maritime Academy on Monday at 11am, while Eastern Connecticut State will host Fitchburg State Wednesday at 7pm.
