Basketball Suffers Setback to Clark in Conference Play

South Hadley, Mass. - February 5, 2022 - Despite a double double from Annika Brooks (Portland, Maine), the Mount Holyoke College basketball team fell to New England Men's and Women's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) competitor Clark University, 74-39, in Howard Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.

The Lyons now have a record of 2-12 and 0-7 in conference play while the Cougars improve to 7-12 and 1-6 in NEWMAC play. 

Brooks led Mount Holyoke with a season-best double double performance of 21 points and 11 rebounds while first-year Cal McGonagle (Yarmouth, Maine) followed with 11 points, six rebounds, and three assists.

Leading Clark was Hannah Favaloro who posted 21 points and 11 rebounds, followed by Emily Sifferlen who recorded 17 points and five steals.

Clark started off the game with a 9-0 run in 2:52 of play. Brooks responded posting a jump shot followed by a layup from sophomore Teal Howle (Florence, S.C.). The team battled in back-and-forth play when McGonagle recorded a three-pointer with 2:56 on the clock. Megan Swedberg of Clark netted a layup followed by Favaloro making a three-point jump shot with under a second remaining on the clock. Clark had the lead at the end of the quarter 22-9.

Mount Holyoke and Clark traded possession with the Cougars in a slight 4-2 advantage. First-year Katherine Rha (Douglaston, N.Y.) passed the ball to McGonagle who netted a second three-pointer in 3:14 of play. Brooks posted a jump shot followed by a 6-0 lead by Clark. First-year Marley Berano (Lady Lake, Fla.) notched a jump shot with 4:33 on the clock followed by the Lyons and Cougars trading possession in back-and-forth play. Clark finished the game with a 6-2 run until the clock expired, ending the period 38-20 with the Cougars in the lead.

Clark started off the third period with a layup from Sifferlen five seconds into the quarter followed by another layup. Brooks notched a layup in 2:05 of play followed by a 12-0 run by Clark. McGonagle notched a jump shot with 1:57 on the clock while Brooks followed with two successful free throws. Camryn Richey of Clark posted a jump shot with three seconds remaining on the clock until the time expired leaving the Cougars in the lead, 56-26. 

The fourth quarter began with a layup from Mikayla Dotson of Clark. Berano responded recording a three-pointer with 1:33 of play in the final period. Brooks continued the run for the Lyons with a layup and jump shot. Clark responded with a pair of layups followed by a jump shot from Brooks in 3:54 of play. Sifferlen of Clark posted a three-pointer followed by another three-pointer from Sarah Zambrano. The teams continued in back-and-forth play until McGonagle scored a career-high third three-pointer of the afternoon with 1:58 remaining on the clock. The two teams trade poccession until the clock expired and Clark notching the win 74-39.

Up next, Mount Holyoke will travel to Cambridge, Mass. to face off NEWMAC competitor MIT on Saturday, February 12. The game is set to begin at 1 p.m.
