Basketball Falls to SUNY Cobleskill in Non-Conference Play

South Hadley, Mass. - January 31, 2022 - Despite scoring 20 points in the third quarter, the Mount Holyoke College basketball team fell to visiting team SUNY Cobleskill, 76-37, in a non-conference play on Monday evening in Howard Gymnasium.

With the loss, Mount Holyoke is now 2-10 overall while SUNY Cobleskill improves to 8-9 on the year. 

Senior Annika Brooks (Portland, Maine) led the Lyons with 13 points and six rebounds, while first-year Marley Berano (Lady Lake, Fla.) recorded 12 points. 

Leading Cobleskill was Hannah Cater who netted 20 points and eight rebounds, while Taylor Meacham followed with 16 points and five rebounds in the win.

Cobleskill started off the game with Cater netting a layup after getting the offensive rebound 33 seconds into the first quarter. Jordan Finch of the Fighting Tigers made a free throw in 1:49 of play and then both teams traded the ball until sophomore Isabel Cordes (Yorktown, Va.) netted a free throw. Cobleskill responded with a 9-0 run until Brooks posted a layup with 2:53 remaining on the clock. The Lyons held off the Fighting Tigers with Berano making a jump shot with 1:27 remaining until Finch made a layup. The teams battled back and forth ending the quarter with Cobleskill in the lead 15-6.

In the second quarter, Cobleskill led with a 16-0 lead until Berano notched a three-pointer with 3:37 remaining on the clock. The Fighting Tigers answered with a layup from Annie Canales as the teams continued to trade possession. With 23 seconds left on the clock Brooks made a layup ending the first half 35-11.

Starting off the third quarter, Cobleskill recorded an 11-0 run in 1:52 of play. Mount Holyoke responded with a layup from McGonagle followed by a layup from Brooks. Fifteen seconds after the timeout called by Cobleskill, McGonagle netted a three-pointer followed by a layup. Cater made a free throw followed by Brooks posting a layup with 3:52 of play to go. After some back-and-forth play, Berano recorded her second three-pointer of the evening with 1:33 remaining on the clock. With 22 seconds left in the third quarter, first-year Katherine Rha (Douglaston, N.Y.) posted a layup with the period ending 55-31.

Cobleskill started the final quarter making a layup 15 seconds into play. The Lyons responded with a layup from Brooks after snagging the offensive rebound. Cobleskill recorded a 16-0 run until Brooks netted a jump shot with 2:59 on the clock. Katlego Tlale of Cobleskill posted a layup followed by a layup from Berano with 2:14 remaining in the game. The Fighting Tigers made a free throw until the clock expired and Cobleskill winning 76-37.

Up next, Mount Holyoke will host New England Men's and Women's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) competitor Coast Guard Academy on Wednesday, February 2. The game is set to begin at 7 p.m.
