Basketball Falls at Rivier

Nashua, N.H. - December 7, 2021 - The Mount Holyoke College basketball team fell to host Rivier University, 87-55, on Tuesday evening at Muldoon Gymnasium despite a 19-point performance from senior forward Annika Brooks (Portland, Maine)

With the loss, the Lyons, which were off to their best start since the 2016-17 season, settle at 2-3 overall, while the Raiders are now 4-4 on the year. Mount Holyoke shot 21-for-61 (34.4%) from the field in the setback, while Rivier was 32-for-71 (45.1%) and owned a 47-33 advantage in rebounds over 40 minutes. 

In addition to Brooks' 19 points, the senior also collected a team-high nine rebounds, while Cal McGonagle (Yarmouth, Maine) finished with 10 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals. Mikayla McEwen (South Hadley, Mass.) chipped in 13 points including three three-pointers to go along with seven rebounds and three steals.

Rivier was led by Lyric Grumblatt, who netted 26 points in the victory and collected 10 rebounds, five assists and two blocks. Anna Stenger came off the bench and picked up 18 points and 12 rebounds in 23 minutes of action.

The Lyons battled back and forth with Rivier through the first two frames, as the Raiders went into the locker room holding a 37-36 lead. However, the hosts dominated the third quarter, owning a 25-2 advantage in the frame, which was the difference.

Mount Holyoke College will close out the 2021-22 semester on Thursday, December 16 when the Lyons head to Elms College for a 5 p.m. contest.
