Lyons Tales: A Review & Preview of Mount Holyoke Athletics for Sept. 28th

 

FIELD HOCKEY

The field hockey team went 1-1 last week, defeating Wesleyan by a 3-0 margin, before suffering a 2-1 loss in double-overtime to Wellesley in their NEWMAC opener. Junior keeper Liz DiCesare (Westford, Mass.) notched 17 saves on the week, including 14 in the loss to the Blue. Mount Holyoke (4-4; 0-1 NEWMAC) is back in action on Saturday when it travels to Worcester for a 1pm match at Clark.

SOCCER

The Lyons went 2-0 last week, extending their five game unbeaten streak (4-0-1) with wins over Rensselaer (3-1) and previously unbeaten Emerson (2-0). First year forward Sara Sanaú Ruiz (Zaragoza, Spain) scored all five goals on the week for the Lyons, including her first collegiate hat trick in the win over RPI. Mount Holyoke (5-2-1; 1-0-1 NEWMAC) is back on the pitch on Tuesday, hosting Bay Path at 6pm. The Lyons close out the week with a 1pm conference home game against MIT.

TENNIS

Mount Holyoke posted a 9-0 win at Smith and saw players Ayame Yazawa (Tokyo, Japan) and Margaux Holloschutz (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) in action at the ITA Northeast Regionals last week. Both faced tough competition at this year's ITA's, shouldering losses in the opening round. The Lyons are back on the courts on Saturday, returning to NEWMAC play with a 1pm match against Clark in Worcester.

 

VOLLEYBALL

The Lyons suffered an 0-3 week with NEWMAC losses to MIT, Clark and Wheaton. First year middle hitter Jamesa Allen (Orlando, Fla.) had five block solos and four block assists during the three game span. MHC (5-6; 0-5 NEWMAC) returns to action on Tuesday, hosting Wellesley at 7pm. The Lyons conclude the week in a tri-match at Regis College, taking on Worcester State (1pm) and the host Pride (3pm).

CROSS COUNTRY

MHC was back in action at the Purple Valley Classic last weekend, finishing ninth of 17 teams at the highly competitive meet. Senior Elizabeth DeLeon paced the effort for the Lyons, finishing 47th overall with a time of 23:52.5. Mount Holyoke returns to action on Friday when it competes at the Paul Short Invitational, hosted at Lehigh University.

RIDING

The Lyons were idle last week, but return to action on Saturday when they open their regular season schedule at the Smith College Show.


GOLF

Mount Holyoke hosted its MHC Invitational last weekend, finishing fifth of 14 teams at this year's event. The Lyons were led by junior captain June Conti (Amenia, N.Y.), who finished in a tie for fifth overall. MHC is back on the links this weekend when it heads to Vermont to compete at the Middlebury Invitational. Action begins on Saturday and runs through Sunday.
