SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- The Mount Holyoke College tennis team rose to 3-1, including a 3-0 mark against Division III competition, as the Lyons opened spring semester play with a 9-0 victory over Gordon College on Saturday at the MHC Indoor Tennis Courts.
Mount Holyoke set the tone by sweeping doubles play. Sophomore captain Cal Smith (Bridgewater, Mass.) and first-year Rachel Allen (Mary Esther, Fla.) put away Chloe Hanley and Amanda Kim 8-0 at No. 2 doubles, before junior captain Annika Chai (London, England) and sophomore Kirat Kaur (Chandigarh, India) defeated Annette Kim and Serena Ross 8-3 at No. 1 doubles. Sophomores Kate Vavra (Weston, Mass.) and Kennedy Bagley-Fortner (Montclair, N.J.) gave the Lyons a 3-0 lead with their 8-4 defeat of Abbigail Fournier and Kristin Kendall at third doubles.
The Lyons proceeded to win all six singles matches in straight sets, including a 6-0, 6-0 win by Chai at the No. 1 position.
Mount Holyoke (3-1) will host Bates on Saturday, March 2 at 12pm. Gordon (6-6) will play Bridgewater College on Friday at 10am.
