Tennis Suffers NEWMAC Loss to Babson

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – It was a sweep for the Babson College women's tennis team as the Beavers defeated Mount Holyoke College, 9-0, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday.

The win moves Babson to 9-1 overall and 6-1 in conference play, while the Lyons are now 7-3 and 5-3 in the NEWMAC. Both teams have secured their spots in the upcoming NEWMAC Tournament, which will begin on October 21st.

Babson cruised out to a 3-0 lead after doubles action as the first flight team of sophomores Yagmur Akgul (Istanbul, Turkey/Enka) and Jenny Quenard (St.-Legier, Switzerland/Saddlebrook Preparatory School) notched an 8-2 win over MHC's Ayame Yazawa (Tokyo, Japan/St. Johnsbury Academy) and senior Margaux Holloschutz (Franklin Lakes, N.J./Saddle River Day School).

In the second flight, Babson's Tori Paolino (East Orleans, Mass./Nauset Regional) and Dina Weick (Woodbridge, Conn./Amity) powered their way to an 8-2 win against Lyons' junior Amy Chen (Hilo, Hawaii/Hilo) and first year Madison Rosen (Portland, Ore./Grant).

Rounding out the action was the Beavers duo of Chloe Brandt (Denver, Colo./Laurel Springs) and Eleni Gianelos (West Chester, Pa./Unionville), who had an 8-2 win over MHC's Caitlyn Johnston (Jupiter, Fla./Matlock Academy) and Clara Wang (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand).

Babson carried the momentum into singles as Akgul defeated Yazawa, 6-1, 6-1 in the first flight. Gianelos recorded a 6-0, 6-3 win against Holloschutz, while Quenard was a 6-0, 6-4 victory over junior Alexa Colas (Teaneck, N.J./The Dwight-Englewood School) at three.

In the fourth flight, Paolino notched a 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) win against Wang, while Weick was a 6-1, 6-1 winner against MHC senior Michelle Cai (Hong Kong, China/St. Paul's Co-Educational School) at five, 6-1, 6-1. At six, Brandt posted a 6-1, 6-0 win against Rosen.

The Lyons are back in action next weekend when they compete at the 2015 NEWITT Tournament, hosted by Amherst and Smith Colleges. Babson concludes its NEWMAC schedule on Wednesday in a 3pm match against Emerson.
