Tennis Falls to MIT in NEWMAC Action

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. - The MIT women's tennis team remained undefeated on the season, posting a 9-0 victory at Mount Holyoke in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday afternoon. The win moves the Engineers to 4-0, both on the season and in conference play. The Lyons are now 4-2 with a 2-2 NEWMAC mark.

MIT started the match with identical 8-1 wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to take an early 2-0 advantage. Mount Holyoke saw it's No. 1 team of freshman Ayame Yazawa (Tokyo, Japan) and senior Margaux Holloschutz (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) give a good battle against MIT's team of Elysa Kohrs (Half Moon Bay, Calif.) and sophomore Cindy Liu (Claremont, Calif.), but the Engineers' duo prevailed, 8-3, to put MIT up 3-0 going into singles play.

Sophomore Dora Tzeng (Fremont, Calif.) gave MIT its first point in singles play, taking a 6-0, 6-1 win over sophomore Ishita Tibrewal (Kolkata, India) in the No. 3 match. Junior Wendi Kong (Cupertino, Calif.) then secured the match win for the Engineers, defeating her opponent in the No. 6 match by a 6-0, 6-0 score. MIT went on to capture the remaining singles matches in straight sets, with closest contests coming at No. 2 and No. 5. In the No. 2 match freshman Kelly Zhu (Houston, Texas) held off Holloschutz, 6-2, 6-2 while Liu defeated junior Alexa Colas (Teaneck, N.J.), 6-3, 6-1 in the No. 5 contest.

MIT will continue in NEWMAC play on Tuesday, September 22, when the Engineers will travel to Babson College for a battle of undefeated teams that will begin at 3:30 p.m. Mount Holyoke will also play on Tuesday, traveling to Smith College for a 5:00 p.m. matchup.
