Tennis Defeats UMass-Boston, 9-0 in Season Opener

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. - Dominant performances from all ends of the lineup helped power the Mount Holyoke College tennis team to a 9-0 victory over UMass-Boston on Thursday morning. It was the season opener for both squads.

Battling through soaring temperatures, the Lyons jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the opening doubles efforts. In the first flight, senior captain Margaux Holloschutz (Franklin Lakes, N.J./Saddle River Day School) and first year Ayame Yazawa (Tokyo, Japan/St. Johnsbury Academy) notched an 8-1 win over the Beacons' pairing of sophomore Kristy Garcia (Miami, Fla./Immaculata LaSalle) and senior Logan Smith (Southwick, Mass./Holyoke Catholic).

Junior Alexa Colas (Teaneck, N.J./The Dwight-Englewood School) and sophomore Ishita Tibrewal (Kolkata, India/Modern HS for Girls) cruised to an 8-1 win over junior Kelsey Shea (West Bridgewater, Mass./West Bridgewater) and junior Vicky Woytowicz (Springfield, Mass./SABIS International Charter) in the second flight.

The final doubles match-up saw junior Amy Chen (Hilo, Hawaii/Hilo) and first year Madison Rosen (Portland, Ore./Grant) notch an 8-3 win over UMass senior Nurcin Celebi (Istanbul, Turkey/Burncoat) and junior Kathleen Conroy (Quincy, Mass./Quincy).

In the singles action, the Lyons dominated in all six flights, powered by Yazawa in the first flight, who captured a 6-1, 6-0 win against Garcia. Holloschutz earned a 6-0, 6-2 win against Smith from the second flight, while Tibrewal was the victor at three with a 6-1, 6-0 triumph over Celebi.

Colas had a 6-1, 6-0 victory against Woytowicz, while MHC first year Clara Wang (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) notched a 6-0, 6-1 win over Beacons sophomore Meghan Erickson (Hubbardston, Mass./Quabbin Regional). Rounding out the action was senior captain Michelle Cai (Hong Kong, China/St. Paul's Co-Educational College).

The Lyons are back in action on Saturday when they open NEWMAC play at home against Wheaton at 1pm. UMass-Boston is in action this afternoon in a 3:30pm match at Smith.
