Tennis Closes Out 2015-16 With 6-3 Win Over Endicott

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – It was a come-from-behind effort for the Mount Holyoke College tennis team as the Lyons posted a 6-3 Senior Day win over Endicott College on Saturday. With the victory, the Lyons conclude their season with a 14-9 record, while the Gulls are now 12-3.

The visitors got off to a hot start in doubles action, taking a 2-1 advantage. In second doubles, the Endicott duo of first years Haley Barnett (Marlboro, N.J./Marlboro) and Margot Andreasen (Portland, Maine/Portland) notched an 8-6 win over Lyons sophomore Ishita Tibrewal (Kolkata, India/Modern HS for Girls) and first year Madison Rosen (Portland, Ore./Grant).

Endicott grabbed the advantage in third doubles as first year Alexi Losano (Sagus, Mass./Austin Preparatory) and junior Jamie Zompa (Marlborough, Mass./Marlborough) posted an 8-3 win over MHC first year Clara Wang (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) and senior captain Michelle Cai (Hong Kong, China/St. Paul's Co-Educational College).

Mount Holyoke saw its first doubles pair of first year Ayame Yazawa (Tokyo, Japan/St. Johnsbury Academy (Vt.) and senior captain Margaux Holloschutz (Franklin Lakes, N.J./Saddle River Day School) best Gulls sophomore Maxine Bergstein (Hingham, Mass./Hingham) and junior Mackenzie Rhodes (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth), 8-3 to grab the first point for the Lyons.

In singles action, the homestanding Lyons shined as Holloschutz made it a 2-2 match with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Andreasen in the second flight. Yazawa pushed it to a 3-2 advantage a short time later as she won 6-3, 6-0 over Barnett at one.

Junior Amy Chen (Hilo, Hawaii/Hilo) increased the lead to 4-2 for Mount Holyoke after recording a 6-3, 6-1 victory against Gulls' first year Lauren Rahr (Waterford, Conn./Waterford) in the six spot.

With three other matches still on court, the game was still tight, but the deciding point came on court five as Cai grabbed a 7-5, 6-3 win over Bergstein to make it a 5-2 score. Endicott grabbed a point back at three as first year Reilly Fitzgibbons (Killingworth, Conn./Haddam Killingworth) battled back for a 2-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-4) victory over Tibrewal.

Wang sealed the 6-3 win for Mount Holyoke at five, coming from behind for a 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (10-5) win against first year Gillian Freter (Scituate, Mass./Thayer Academy).

Endicott returns to action this afternoon with a 3pm match at Smith College.
