Tennis Splits Opening Action at Seven Sisters Championship

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - It was a solid opening day of action for the Mount Holyoke College tennis team as the Lyons went 1-1 in action at the Seven Sisters Championship, hosted by Vassar College. MHC shouldered a 5-0 loss to Wellesley, but defeated Bryn Mawr in game two. MHC is now 11-8 overall.

Match two against the Owls saw the Lyons sweep singles, led by first year Ayame Yazawa in the first flight with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Kendall Baller. Senior captain Margaux Holloschutz posted a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Tirsa Delate at two, while third flight saw classmate and fellow captain Michelle Cai defeat Eram Haider, 6-2, 6-4.

In first flight doubles, Lyons' sophomore Ishita Tibrewal and first year Madison Rosen suffered a tough 5-7, 6-1, 11-9 loss to Owls' duo Melina Koukoutchos and Lizzie Siegle, but the second flight saw MHC junior Amy Chen and first year Clara Wang defeat Abbygail Brewster and Rosa Haas, 6-1, 6-0.

In the opener against Wellesley, Yazawa suffered a tough loss to Carina Chen in first flight singles, falling 6-3, 6-2. Holloschutz suffered a 6-1, 6-3 loss to Justine Huang at two, while Cai fell 6-2, 6-2 to So Jin Ki.

Doubles action saw Wellesley's Samantha Stone and Dasha Kostikina best Tibrewal and Rosen, 6-2, 6-2, before the Blue's Rosanne Hu and Emily Olson bested Chen and Wang, 6-0, 6-0.

Wellesley and Vassar currently lead the team standings with two victories (two points apieces) each after the opening day of action. Mount Holyoke is third with one point, followed by Smith and Bryn Mawr (0 points).

Action at this year's tournament continues on Sunday as the Lyons battle the host Brewers at 10:30am, followed by a match against Smith at 1:30pm.
