Tennis Improves to 3-0; Defeats Simmons, 7-2

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Powered by a strong effort in singles action, the Mount Holyoke College tennis team defeated Simmons College, 7-2, at the MIT Tennis Courts on Monday afternoon. The Lyons are now 3-0 on the season, while the Sharks slip to 1-2.

The match opened with doubles action as the Simmons first team of Theresa Reinhard and Meg Cokely posted an 8-2 win over MHC senior captain Margaux Holloschutz and first year Ayame Yazawa. The Lyons bounced back in the second and third flights. At two, Lyons junior Alexa Colas and sophomore Ishita Tibrewal gutted out an 8-6 win against Rachael Downey and Ashley Chen.

Doubles concluded with junior Amy Chen and first year Madison Rosen posting an 8-4 victory over Katie Crowley and Mary Matthews.

Singles action saw Yazawa battle to a 7-5, 6-2 win over Reinhard in the first flight. At two, Simmons' Cokely got the best of Holloschutz, posting a 6-3, 6-1 victory. Tibrewal went on to record a 7-5, 6-1 win against Crowley in the third flight, while Colas gutted out a 6-3, 5-7, 10-6 win against Downey at four.

First year Clara Wang was the victor at five, notching a 7-5, 7-5 win against Chen, while senior captain Michelle Cai had a 6-1, 6-0 win against Lilli Blumkin at six.

With the singles wins, Yazawa, Tibrewal, Colas, Wang and Cai all improve to 3-0 on the season. Additionally, Tibrewal and Colas, along with Chen and Rosen, move to 3-0 in doubles.

Mount Holyoke returns to the court on Saturday when it travels to Emerson (1pm) for a NEWMAC tilt. The Lyons continue conference action the next day, playing at Wellesley (11am) on Sunday.
