Swimming & Diving Powers Past USJ, 175-81

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Powered by victories in 16 of 17 events, the Mount Holyoke College swimming & diving team posted a 175-81 victory over the University of Saint Joseph on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Lyons moved to 1-1 in dual meet action, while the BlueJays slipped to 0-2.

The Lyons opened the day with a solid win in the 200-medley relay as senior captain Maya Lazarovich, sophomores Katie Tyler and Emily Craig, along with first year Rachel Polfer, posted a time of 2:10.38. Junior Cathleen Pruden then swam to a win in the 1000-freestyle, touching the wall with a time of 10:48.84.

In the 200-free, first year Willa Holmes was the winner with a time of 2:05.45, while sophomore Anne Kuenning picked up a win in the 50-backstroke, sporting a time of 29.80. The 50-breaststroke saw first year Claire Beckett notch a time of 34.16, followed by a victory in the 100-butterfly (1:07.01) by junior captain Sarah Crocker.

First year Zahra Alley-Baktoo was the first-place finisher in the 50-free with a time of 27.24, while Craig was victorious in the 100-free with a time of 58.37. Kuenning grabbed another win in the 100-back (1:03.39), while Tyler claimed victory in the 100-breast (1:17.04).

In the 500-free, sophomore Sarah Bertekap was the winner with a time of 5:56.47, while Pruden posted the top time in both the 50-fly (27.46) and the 200-IM (2:44.02). Rounding out the meet was the 200-free relay team of Craig, Tyler, Alley-Baktoo and Pruden, who touched the wall first with a mark of 1:44.05.

The Lyons return to action next Saturday in a 1pm meet at Westfield State University.
