Track and Field Opens 2019-20 Season at Smith College Winter Classic

Northampton, Mass. - December 7, 2019 - The Mount Holyoke College track and field team opened their indoor season on Saturday afternoon at the Smith College Winter Classic.

 In the field events, Charleen Theroux (Coventry, R.I.) was second in the long jump competition with a mark of 4.94 meters, while Tyeshia Dixon (Helene-West Helena, Ark.) took ninth with a mark of 4.41 in her first collegiate competition. Dixon would go on to be the Lyons' top performer in the triple jump, clearing a personal-best 9.81 meters, while in the high jump, Caitlin Lynch (Princeton, Mass.) was second, clearing 1.55 meters. Lucy Sternberg (Stonington, Conn.) also posted a personal-best mark of 9.34 meters in the triple jump. 

Mount Holyoke College had five student-athletes competing in the 5000 meter run, as the Lyons were led by Meryl Phair (Stockbridge, Mass.), who posted a time of 20:43.56, followed by Emma Raney (Palo Alto, Calif.), who crossed in 20:44.46. Charlotte Lindblom (Takoma Park, Md.) also had an impressive effort, finishing in a career-best time of 21:28.45. 

Junior Isabelle Wohlin (Wellesley, Mass.) had the best prelim time in the 60 meter hurdles as the junior crossed in a career-best time of 9.86 seconds, before taking second with a time of 10.17 seconds in the finals.

Lynch finished the 200 meter dash in a personal-best time of 28.95 seconds, just edging Rosemary Geib (Jamestown, R.I.), who crossed in 28.98. Sara Robillard (Delran, N.J.) also had a career-best time of 33.68 seconds. 

The Lyons had five student-athletes record career-best times in the 60 meter dash as they were led by Wohlin's time of 8.46 seconds, followed by a personal-best time of 8.50 seconds for Theroux. Next was Geib with a personal-best time of 8.64 seconds, then Sternberg, who crossed in 8.77 seconds. Wrapping up the group was Michaela Phelan (Swampscott, Mass.), who posted a career-best time of 9.01 seconds. 

Mount Holyoke College will return to action on Sunday, January 19 when the Lyons travel to the GBTC Invitational in Boston, Mass. The meet is set to begin at 9:30 a.m.
