Larson-Koester Leads Outdoor Track and Field at Aloha Relays

BRUNSWICK, Maine (Apr. 21, 2012) – A total of five members of the Mount Holyoke College outdoor track and field team earned points this weekend at Bowdoin College's Aloha Relays. Senior Miriam Larson-Koester set the tone with her outstanding results in the throwing events.

In addition to taking home first place in the discus (41.62 meters), Larson-Koester also turned in a fifth place performance in the shot put (10.99 meters). She accounted for 12 of Mount Holyoke's 20 points. The Lyons finished in sixth place overall.

Sophomore Kathleen O'Connor contributed four points to the team total with her fourth place time of 1:16.11. She crossed the line just in front of classmate Kate Brackett, who posted a sixth place time of 1:17.54.

Fellow sophomore Maeve Stier secured fifth place in the high jump (1.47 meters). Meanwhile, junior Connie Ward chipped in with a sixth place performance in the shot put (10.44 meters).

Mount Holyoke also received a boost from first year Meara Algama, who collected eighth place in the javelin (29.96 meters). Senior Holly Valenzuela finished 10th in the 800-meter run (2:29.81) and 11th place in the 1,500 meter run (5:04.93).

Bowdoin raced to the team title with 196 points. The Polar Bears were followed by the University of Southern Maine (131) and Colby College (122) in the top three. The field also included Bates College (82.5), Smith College (63.5) and Husson University (9).

The Lyons are slated to take part in the NEWMAC Championships at Smith College next Saturday.
