New London, Conn. - March 8, 2020 - Despite a pair of wins for standout senior Catherine Peabody (San Francisco, Calif.), the Mount Holyoke College tennis team dropped a 7-2 decision in the Luce Field House at Connecticut College on Sunday. 

With the loss, the Lyons drop to 2-3 overall while the Camels improved to 2-2 with the victory.

The match opened with doubles play where Connecticut College's Alexandra Waldman and Rachel Weiss delivered an 8-4 win over Hannah Middleton (Pawcatuck, Conn.) and Shweta Kiran Cavale (Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India) at No. 3 to give the Camels their first point, before the hosts took a 2-0 lead as Ching-Ching Huang (Lukang Township, Taiwan) and Annissa Aamoum (Dulles, Va.) fell to Meredith Kenny and Brooke Scully 8-7 (7-2). The Lyons got their first point of the day when Peabody and Anya Gerasimova (Salem, Ore.) defeated Allison Falvey and Stephanie Simon 8-5.

In singles play, Gerasimova lost to Hayley Zukerberg at No. 2 as the Camels took a 3-1 lead, before Scully defeated Kiran Cavale 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4, making it 4-1 Connecticut College. At No. 1, Huang fell to Weiss in a battle 6-7(5-7), 6-2, 5-7, as the Camels took a 5-1 advantage.

From there, Peabody had an outstanding performance at No. 3 singles, knocking off Stephanie Simon in come-from-behind fashion, 6-7(7-9), 6-3, 6-4, before Aamoum and Middleton both dropped decisions at No. 5 and No. 6 to suffer the 7-2 setback. Middleton was able to take a set off of Kenny, falling 3-6, 6-1, 8-10.

Up next, Mount Holyoke College will head to Florida for Spring Break as the Lyons are lined up to play Grinnell, Salisbury and Williams Smith.
