Tennis Blanks Simmons in Season Opener, 9-0

Boston, Mass. - September 15, 2019 - The Mount Holyoke College tennis team opened up the 2019-20 campaign in impressive fashion, as the Lyons came away with a 9-0 win over Simmons at Daly Field on Sunday afternoon.

Mount Holyoke College's win marked the third-consecutive season that the Lyons have opened the year with a 9-0 victory over the Sharks.

The Lyons opened up with doubles play as Ching-Ching Huang (Lukang Township, Taiwan) and Annissa Aamoum (Dulles, Va.) defeated Marissa Johnson (Norwell, Mass.) and Nickie Nguyen (Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam), 8-1 in the No. 1 slot, while at No. 2 doubles, Catherine Peabody (San Francisco, Calif.) and Anya Gerasimova (Salem, Ore.) knocked off Megan McKeever (Stamford, Conn.) and Carrie St. Peter (Chester, N.H.) 8-2. Wrapping up doubles play at No. 3, first-year Shweta Kiran Cavale (Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India) and Hannah Middleton (Pawcatuck, Conn.) picked up an 8-2 win over Mary Miller (Newton, N.H.) and Libby Weed (Brooksville, Maine).

At No. 1 singles, Huang defeated Johnson, 6-1, 6-0, while at No. 2 singles, Gerasimova defeated Nguyen, 6-1, 6-1. At No. 3 singles, Peabody took care of business with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Sarah Mariski (Portland, Maine), while at No. 4 singles, Kiran Cavale won 6-2, 6-1 over Leah Bonis (Bath, Maine). Wrapping up the top six, Aamoum defeated McKeever, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 singles, while Middleton cruised past Samantha Margolin (Ridgefield, Conn.) 6-2, 6-0, at No. 6.

The Lyons will resume competition on Friday, September 20 as it travels to the Tennis Hall of Fame Invitational in Newport, R.I.
