Huang Takes Down Nationally-Ranked Player in Singles Action; Tennis Falls to Vassar, 7-2

South Hadley, Mass. - February 22, 2020 - Despite an impressive win at the No. 1 spot from Ching-Ching Huang (Lukang Township, Taiwan) in singles play, the Mount Holyoke College tennis team fell to visiting Vassar College, 7-2, in the MHC Field House on Saturday.

With the loss, the Lyons are now 2-1 while the Brewers improve to 2-1 with the victory. Huang knocked off Miriam Gandham at the No. 1 spot, 6-3, 6-3. Coming into the match, Gandham was ranked No. 12 in all of Division III women's tennis, as well as No. 6 in the Northeast Region.

Starting with doubles, the lone win for Mount Holyoke College came at the No. 3 position, as Hannah Middleton (Pawcatuck, Conn.) and Shweta Kiran Cavale (Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India) defeated Tatum Blalock and Cara Kizilbash, 8-1. At No. 1, Huang and Annissa Aamoum (Dulles, Va.) fell to Sarra Yekta and Miriam Gandham, 8-6, while Catherine Peabody (San Francisco, Calif.) and Anya Gerasimova (Salem, Ore.) dropped an 8-4 decision at No. 2.

Vassar's Frances Cornwall turned in the first singles victory for the Brewers, as she defeated Gerasimova at No. 2, 6-1, 6-0. Next, at No. 4, Cavale fell to Melina Stavropoulos 6-0, 7-6 (8-6), before Peabody was bested by Blalock at No. 3, 6-0, 6-3.

After Kizilbash defeated Aamoum at No. 5, 6-3, 7-5, Huang's decision came in, giving the Lyons an additional point in singles play. Wrapping up the match, Middleton fell to Jade Wilkinson, 2-6, 6-3, 10-5.

Up next, Mount Holyoke College will return to the MHC Field House on Saturday, February 29 as the Lyons host Bates College at 1 p.m.
