Swimming and diving opens with home win over Nor'easters

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- The Mount Holyoke College swimming and diving team enjoyed a strong start to the 2024-25 season on Saturday with a 149-113 head-to-head win against visiting University of New England on Saturday in the MHC Natatorium.

"Our team swam really well and a couple of people set personal bests, which is awesome so early in the season," said Lyons head coach Dave Allen. "Our two divers had strong performances for this early in the season. We're thrilled how well we competed today."

The Lyons opened with a 2.18-second win in the 200-yard medley relay, with a time of 1:57.40 recorded by junior Sophie Allen (Lopez Island, Wash.), senior Megan Schneider (Newton, Mass.), sophomore Isabel Dunn (Harbor Springs, Mich.), and senior Kamlyn Yosick (Portland, Ore.).

The Lyons also took first place in the meet-concluding 200-yard freestyle relay, with Allen, sophomore Nat Rockwell (Orwell, Vt.), Yosick and Schneider timing in at 1:46.26.

Other top-two event performances by the Lyons included:

  • Dunn won the 200 butterfly (2:20.17), the 100 butterfly (1:01.76), and the 200-yard individual medley (2:22.62).
  • Yosick won the 50 free (25.89) and the 100 free (57.45).
  • Allen also took first place in the 100-yard backstroke (1:06.81).
  • Senior Hannah Heierhoff (Wiesbaden, Germany) won the 1,000-yard freestyle in 11:51.23 and was second in the 500 free (5:49.12).
  • Schneider was second in both the 100 breast (1:14.21) and the 200 breast (2:44.36).
  • Sophomore Madeline Hood (The Colony, Texas) placed second in the 200 free (2:11.39).
  • Sophomore Zoey Zhu (Sturbridge, Mass.) placed second in the 100 back (1:08.68).
  • Rockwell placed second in the 50 free (28.03)
  • Senior Emily Tarinelli (Groton, Conn.) was second in the 100 butterfly (1:11.32).
  • In exhibition diving, senior Noa Sharabi (Richmond, Calif.) scored 131.00 points and first-year Katherine Upton (Cambridge, Mass.) scored 130.55 points on the 1-meter board.

"It was a great meet with UNE; it's always strong competition between the two teams and both teams love competing against each other," said Allen.

Mount Holyoke will compete at Westfield State on Friday at 6:30pm.
