Methsarani Earns Four-Game Victory; Squash Falls to No. 15 Amherst

Amherst, Mass. - February 4, 2020 - Standout sophomore Mihiliya Methsarani (Panadura, Sri Lanka) battled to a four-game victory at the No. 1 spot, but the Mount Holyoke College squash team fell to nationally-ranked Amherst College at the Davenport Squash Courts on Tuesday.

Methsarani defeated Amherst No. 1 Daksha Pathak 11-9, 12-10, 6-11, 11-6 to improve to 9-4 on the year for the Lyons.

The two sides played on five courts, with No. 2, No. 4, No. 5, No. 8 and No. 9 all competing first. At No. 2, Jennifer Mbah (Jamaica Plain, Mass.) fell to Lauren Well 11-0, 11-1, 11-0, before Emma Robson (Amherst, Mass.) dropped an 11-3, 11-1, 11-2 decision at No. 4.

Junior Genesis Lara Granados (Bronx, N.Y.) was placed at No. 5 and fell to Riddhi Sampat by the game scores of 11-2, 11-0, 11-2, while at No. 8, Jing Xu (Hangzhou, China) lost 11-1, 11-0, 11-1. Wrapping up at No. 9, Elba Barra Montgomery (Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania) suffered an 11-1, 11-2, 11-0 setback.

Next on the court were the No. 1, No. 3, No. 6 and No. 7 matches. Giselle Cabrera (Bronx, N.Y.) lost at No. 3 11-1, 11-0, 11-2, while at No. 6 Nicole Lara Granados (Bronx, N.Y.) fell 11-1, 11-1, 11-1. Following a 11-0, 11-2, 11-1 setback for Janiqua Davis (New Haven, Conn.) at No. 7, Methsarani picked up the lone win of the day for Mount Holyoke College at No. 1.

The Lyons fall to 2-12 overall, while the Mammoths, which were ranked No. 15 in the latest College Squash Association (CSA) National Rankings, improve to 10-4.

Mount Holyoke College will now prepare for a trip to Vassar College to square off with Smith and Vassar on Saturday, February 15.
