CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Mount Holyoke senior Clarissa Govea stood on their head with a jaw-dropping performance in goal, and the Lyons won their first conference point against the most unlikely opponent Saturday in a 1-1 tie at No. 8 nationally ranked MIT.
The tie ends the Engineers' 22-game winning streak in NEWMAC play, which dates to the 2023 season. It also stops MIT's 14-game winning streak against Mount Holyoke, dating to 2009.
Junior Evie Krieg (Frisco, Texas) scored with an assist from senior Annie Bethell (Baltimore, Md.) in the 72nd minute to tie the game for the Lyons, in spite of an ultimate 35-2 difference in shots between the teams.
Govea (Pico Rivera, Calif.) was credited with 13 saves and thwarted perhaps five sure goals by the Engineers with spectacular saves. Already the conference leader in save percentage and saves per game, Govea raised those numbers to .874 and 9.62, respectively.
MIT (15-2-1, 8-0-1 NEWMAC) scored its lone goal on a corner kick by Leena Mehendale that skipped through a tangle of players and landed inside the far post for a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute.
But the Lyons (1-9-4, 0-8-1 NEWMAC) tied the game with 18:50 remaining, on one of their first forays into MIT's half. Krieg battled an MIT defender to win the ball as it bounced from midfield toward the Engineers goal on a Lyons throw-in. Krieg tapped it toward Bethell, who beat another defender to the ball just in time to tap it back to Krieg. Krieg then one-timed a chip shot 15 yards over the reach of MIT keeper Maddy Noff that found the inside of the near post.
Krieg's goal was the first of her career, perhaps mostly because she also primarily plays goalie, and very well, winning All-NEWMAC honors last season. This season, Krieg has mainly played forward, while Govea has been MHC's regular starter, in an exceptional season also worthy of All-NEWMAC honors.
Ironically, it was Krieg who netted Mount Holyoke's first goal in 10 games, and helped end the Lyons' seven-game skid with Govea tending goal.
