BABSON PARK, Mass.— First-year Emma Dineen (Hinsdale, Ill.) scored 46 seconds into the second half to lift third-seeded Babson College past sixth-seeded Mount Holyoke College, 1-0, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament quarterfinal match on Tuesday afternoon at Hartwell-Rogers Field.
With the victory, Babson is now 13-3-4 overall and advances to the conference tournament semifinals for the fourth consecutive season, while Mount Holyoke concludes its year at 9-7-3.
Dineen's strike came on the heels of a first half that saw the Beavers unable to convert on multiple scoring opportunities after dominating possession throughout the period. After receiving the ball on the left flank she carried it towards the penalty box and cut inside before hitting a low 25-yard shot that made its way through traffic inside the six-yard box and found its way inside the right post untouched at the 45:46 mark for the only goal of the match.
The Lyons, who were held without a shot on frame, had a pair of chances to equalize late in the game. First-year Sara Sanaú Ruiz (Zaragoza, Spain) saw her 20-yard free kick sail just over the crossbar in the 79th minute, while sophomore Jamie Collings (Gainesville, Fla.) had his shot blocked out of play after breaking into the box in the 90th minute.
The Green and White finished with a 29-8 edge in shots and forced Mount Holyoke junior goalkeeper Zoe Marshall (Mississauga, Ontario) to make seven first half saves. In addition to the shots on target, junior Marissa Endow (Worcester, Mass.) hit the crossbar in the sixth minute and first-year Jessica Fernandes (Pawtucket, Mass.) had a goal waved off in the 30th minute after being ruled offside.
First-year goalkeeper Elizabeth Mycock (Windham, Maine) did not have to make a save to record her seventh clean sheet and the Beavers' single-season record 13th shutout of the season. Marshall turned away 10 shots for the Lyons.
Babson will now face second-seeded Wheaton at 1:30 p.m. in Saturday's second semifinal match at MIT.
