DUDLEY, Mass. - Sophomore Jamie Collings notched a penalty kick goal, but Nichols proved to be too much for the Lyons as MHC fell by a 4-1 margin at Nichols on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Bison are now 1-1-0 overall, while the Lyons also slip to 1-1-0 in the loss.
Nichols jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute as Jillian Krish scored on a cross from the left side by Lauren MacGray for the center shot. The home team made it a 2-0 margin in the 38th minute as Meghan Dunn scored on a right side low shot past MHC keeper Zoe Marshall. Assisting on the play was Brittany Busco, who sent in the cross to Dunn.
In the second half, it would be Dunn once again, this time scoring on a penalty kick in the 56th minute to make it a 3-0 game. Minutes later, Dunn notched an assist as she sent a free kick in to the left side for Lindsey Stewart, who scored for the four-goal advantage.
Collings cut the deficit to three (4-1) after he earned a penalty kick in the 83rd minute, but it wasn't enough for the Lyons to battle back.
Mount Holyoke dominated by a 23-11 margin in shots, while also holding a 4-2 advantage on corners.
The Lyons saw first year Sara Sanau Ruiz record 10 shots (4 on goal) in the contest, while sophomore Jentrie Grissom added four shots (3 on goal). Collings also had four shots (3 on goal), while sophomore Suz Rose added three shots (1 on goal). In net, Marshall made five saves on the afternoon.
Mount Holyoke returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts area-rival Amherst at the MHC Soccer Field at 7pm.
