WESTMINSTER, Md. (March 15, 2011) – Using a balanced scoring attack and a stingy defense, the Mount Holyoke College women's lacrosse team opened up its spring break trip with a convincing 14-0 victory over Concordia University of Wisconsin this morning at McDaniel College's Scott S. Bair Stadium. Nine players scored goals for the Lyons, who picked up their second straight win and improved to 2-2 on the year.
Junior attacker Alex Crean collected two goals and two assists to set the tone for Mount Holyoke. The Lyons also received solid production from sophomore midfielder Katya Planson, who posted two goals and a helper.
Attackers Liz Randolph, Hilary Bombard and Christina Horimoto added two goals apiece for Mount Holyoke, which finished with an overwhelming 23-3 advantage in the shot column.
The Lyons' remaining strikes came from Vika Planson, Bianca Young, Naomi Miller and Brianne Phelan. Planson and Miller both added assists.
On the defensive end, goalkeepers Jamie Theophilos and Melissa Saale combined for the fourth shutout in school history. Theophilos made two saves in the first half before giving way to Saale, who faced just one shot after the break. Mount Holyoke's most recent shutout came last year in a 20-0 triumph over Bard College. Prior to that, the Lyons blanked MIT in 1993 (17-0) and Worcester State University in 1975 (13-0).
Mount Holyoke exploded for six goals in the first 5:14 of the contest and led 8-0 at the break. The Lyons then tacked on six more tallies in the second stanza. Over the course of the day, they won 11 of the 16 draw controls. Planson secured five, while Randolph collected three. They also came up with 30 ground balls. Of those, Horimoto recorded five, and Phelan totaled four.
Sophomore goalkeeper Lea Jondal came up with seven saves for Concordia (0-1, 0-0 MWLC), which was competing in its first game as a varsity program.
Mount Holyoke (2-2, 0-0 NEWMAC) will close out its spring break trip versus the University of New England tomorrow at 7:00 p.m. The contest will also take place at McDaniel.
