NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - Junior defender Sammie Pavlov scored the game-winning goal with just 1:28 remaining in overtime, lifting third-seeded Smith College to a 2-1 victory over sixth-seeded Mount Holyoke College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Quarterfinal action on Tuesday evening. With the victory, the Pioneers improve to 12-7 and advance to Thursday's conference semifinal match at second-seeded Springfield College at 7pm. The Lyons conclude their 2018 season with a 9-10 overall mark.

With time expiring in the overtime session, Smith got ahold of the ball, getting it into the offensive zone. Carrying it in from the right side, Pavlov lifted the ball, which sailed over the head of the Mount Holyoke goalkeeper and banked into the goal to end the contest.

Following an opening half that saw Mount Holyoke dominate with a 7-1 edge in shots, Smith got things going in the second stanza with a goal less than four minutes in. Sophomore forward Bryn Murray gave the home team the 1-0 lead, getting it past Lyons sophomore keeper Maddie Miller at 38:41. Mount Holyoke bounced back at the 55:18 mark to net the equalizer. Senior forward Liz Delorme made it happen, sending in an outstanding shot off the corner into the goal past rookie netminder Channy Cornell.

MHC, which once again outpaced the home team in the shots category for the second period (8-1), had a number of chances to earn the victory before the end of regulation including shots from Delorme and sophomore forward Mirei Golding-Powers, both of whoms shot was turned aside by Cornell. In the overtime session, rookie forward Margaret Robb nearly gave the Lyons the sudden death victory after coming in hard on the Smith keeper, but her shot was once again denied on the left side and sent out of the circle.

Cornell made a number of outstanding saves in the win for the Pioneers, stopping 10 total, including five in the first and second halfs. For Mount Holyoke, Miller made one save.
