Lyons Tales: A Review & Preview of Mount Holyoke Athletics for Aug. 29th

SOCCER

The Lyons open their 2016 season on Thursday when they host Southern Vermont College at 4:30pm. MHC will close out the week with another home contest, this time welcoming UMass-Dartmouth at 1pm. Led by 10th-year head coach Kanae Haneishi, the Lyons posted their most successfull season in over 20 years, going 9-7-3 overall with a 4-3-3 record in conference play. MHC earned a spot in the NEWMAC Tournament for the first time since 2009, falling by a 1-0 margin to Babson in the First Round.

FIELD HOCKEY

The field hockey team kicks off its 2016 season on the road on Saturday. The Lyons head West to Troy, N.Y., for a 1pm contest at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Under the direction of 19th-year head coach Andy Whitcomb, the Lyons look to return to the NCAA Tournament after posting a 15-7 record and going 5-3 overall in the NEWMAC. The squad captured its third NEWMAC Championship title in 2015, defeating Wellesley, 2-1 in a shootout to advance to the NCAA Tournament for the third straight season.

TENNIS

Mount Holyoke opens up its 2016 slate on Thursday when it welcomes Nichols College (2:30pm)  to the MHC Tennis Courts.  Under the direction of 24th-year head coach Aldo Santiago, the Lyons look to return to the NEWMAC Tournament for the 12th straight season after putting forth an outstanding effort last year. MHC went 14-9 in 2015, including a 5-3 mark in the NEWMAC. The team also made its second straight appearance in the conference semifinals. The Lyons close out the week on Saturday, traveling to NEWMAC-rival Wheaton for a 1pm match.

 

VOLLEYBALL

The Lyons take to the floor for the first time in 2016 on Saturday, hosting Western New England University and the University of St. Joseph in tri-match action at the Mildred S. Howard Gymnasium. MHC will take on the Golden Bears at 11am and close out the afternoon with a 3pm match against the BlueJays. WNE and USJ will play the middle match at 1pm. Led by ninth-year head coach Sonnie Terrell, the Lyons return seven players from last season's squad, while welcoming two newcomers to the team.

CROSS COUNTRY

Under the direction of sixth-year head coach Jennifer Adams, the cross country team will open its season on September 10 at the Smith College Invitational. Meet time is set for 11am. The squad returns nine runners from last year's team, which finished second at the Seven Sisters Championship, sixth at NEWMAC's, as well as 19th overall at the NCAA Regional Championships.
