  • Tennis Team Garners ITA National Academic Honors

    The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) recently announced its All-Academic Teams as well as its Scholar Athletes for the 2010-11 season. Eight members of the Mount Holyoke College women’s tennis squad were named Scholar Athletes. In addition, the program picked up All-Academic Team accolades.

    Under the direction of head coach Aldo Santiago, the Mount Holyoke tennis team qualified for the NEWMAC Tournament for the seventh straight season. The Lyons closed out their 2010-11 campaign with an overall record of 9-11 and a league mark of 3-4.

    Prior to the annual athletics awards celebration last Thursday, 24 Mount Holyoke seniors representing 12 teams were honored as part of the College's third annual Scholar Athlete Reception. The recognition event highlighted those student-athletes who have excelled both on the field and in the classroom.

    The Mount Holyoke Department of Athletics hosted its annual awards celebration this evening in Chapin Auditorium. Individuals from all 14 varsity teams were honored. Volleyball player Kara Neidhardt served as the event’s emcee. Rider Lindsay Sceats earned the prestigious Alumnae Association Scholar-Athlete Award.

    Mount Holyoke puts the finishing touches on its 2010-11 campaign with a pair of home matches tomorrow. After facing off against Union at 10:00 a.m., the Lyons will tangle with Roger Williams at 2:00 p.m. Mount Holyoke is perfect in seven previous meetings with Union and three prior encounters with Roger Williams.

    Mount Holyoke closed out its 2010-11 campaign with a pair of convincing wins in front of its home crowd today. After blanking Union 9-0, the Lyons raced to an 8-1 triumph over Roger Williams. They have never fallen to either team.
  • Tennis Earns Third Place at Seven Sisters Championship

    For the second season in a row, Mount Holyoke posted a third place finish at the Seven Sisters Championship. After cruising to a 5-0 triumph over longtime rival Smith, the Lyons fell 5-0 to Vassar. They ended the weekend with a record of 2-2.
  • Tennis Splits First Two Matches at Seven Sisters Championship

    Mount Holyoke split a pair of matches on the opening day of the 2011 Seven Sisters Championship. After blanking Bryn Mawr 5-0, the Lyons fell 5-0 to host Wellesley. Both contests took place at the Keohane Tennis Courts.

    Hundreds of Mount Holyoke athletes gathered on Skinner Green this afternoon for a flash mob to celebrate National Student-Athlete Day. Members of both varsity and club sports participated in the event, which was designed to showcase the unity that exists among athletes across campus.
  • Wesleyan Trips Up Tennis

    Mount Holyoke saw its two match winning streak come to an end with an 8-1 setback at Wesleyan this afternoon. Prior to today’s match, the Lyons had topped both American International College and RPI in convincing fashion. First year Ann Elizabeth Konkel and junior Heather Richardson prevailed 8-5 in their number three doubles match.

    Maya Sayarath, Eman Malik and Sarah Moore each recorded victories at both singles and doubles to propel Mount Holyoke to a convincing 8-1 triumph over RPI today at the Kendall Field House. It was the Lyons’ fifth victory of the season and their second in a row.

    Mount Holyoke entertains non-conference foe RPI tomorrow (10:00 a.m.) at the Kendall Sports and Dance Complex Field House. The Lyons edged the Engineers 5-4 in the first ever meeting between the programs last spring.
  • Tennis Hosts Alumnae Event

    The Mount Holyoke tennis team welcomed home 12 former players for an alumnae match on Sunday. In addition to competing against and alongside current team members, the participants took part in a meet and great session and ate lunch together. The event took place at the Kendall Sports and Dance Complex. Among the participants were six former captains.

    The Mount Holyoke Department of Athletics has unveiled schedules for each of its spring teams. Printable copies of the schedules are available for download here. Teams included are lacrosse, tennis, riding, golf, crew and outdoor track and field.

    Mount Holyoke breezed to a 9-0 victory over American International this evening at the Kendall Field House. The hosts dropped just seven games en route to their first win of the spring and their fourth victory of the season.

    Mount Holyoke hosts non-conference foe American International Thursday afternoon (5:00 p.m.) at the Tennis Courts. The Lyons came out on top 9-0 in the only other meeting between the two programs, which took place during the 1984-85 season.

    In a match that lasted more than seven hours, Mount Holyoke fell 7-2 to Bates this afternoon at the Merrill Indoor Gymnasium. First years Maya Sayarath and Eman Malik came up with wins for the Lyons in their first match of the spring.
  • Mount Holyoke Named a 2011 Best Value College

    Mount Holyoke is once again one of the nation's 50 "Best Value" private colleges and universities, according to the Princeton Review. The educational services company teamed with USA Today to present the list of "The Princeton Review Best Value Colleges for 2011" on February 22. The list features 100 schools in all - 50 private and 50 public colleges and universities.
  • NEWMAC Announces Fall Academic All-Conference Squads

    The NEWMAC recently announced its 2010 Fall Academic All-Conference Teams. Nineteen Mount Holyoke student-athletes were recognized for their achievements in their respective sports as well as in the classroom. Academic All-Conference Teams were selected for the sports of cross country, field hockey, soccer, tennis and volleyball.
  • Tennis Tandem Secures NEWMAC All-Conference Accolades

    Mount Holyoke’s number three doubles tandem of senior Elise Marifian and first year Maya Sayarath were named to the NEWMAC All-Conference Second Team after sprinting to a 5-1 mark in league matches this fall. They were at their best down the stretch, when they won three straight times to help the Lyons secure their seventh straight trip to the NEWMAC Tournament.
  • Tennis Team Set to Host Youth Clinics

    The Mount Holyoke tennis team will be hosting youth tennis clinics during the first two weeks of November. During the clinics, boys and girls ages 8-12 will learn the basics of the forehand, the backhand and the serve. The participants will be grouped by age, ability and experience. In addition to participating in drills and games, they will take part in dynamic warm-up and eye-hand coordination exercises.
  • Babson Eliminates Tennis From NEWMAC Tournament With 5-1 Victory

    Fourth seeded Babson College cruised to a 5-1 victory over fifth seeded Mount Holyoke this afternoon in the Quarterfinal Round of the NEWMAC Tournament. The Lyons' lone point came from senior Elise Marifian, who won her number three singles match by default. They closed out their fall slate with an overall record of 3-7 and a league mark of 3-4.

    The Wheaton College tennis team downed Mount Holyoke 8-1 this afternoon at the Tennis Courts. The Lyons point came from senior Elise Marifian and first year Maya Sayarath, who picked up an 8-4 win at the number three doubles position. It was the tandem’s fourth victory of the fall.

    Mount Holyoke hosts NEWMAC foe Wheaton College Saturday afternoon at the Tennis Courts. In 37 previous meetings between the programs, Wheaton owns a 25-11advantage. The teams have finished in a tie once. Wheaton has downed Mount Holyoke three times in a row, including a 6-3 triumph last fall.
  • Tennis Player Maya Sayarath Snares Lyon of the Week Accolades

    Tennis team member Maya Sayarath has earned the Lyon of the Week Award for the week of September 27 - October 3. In three matches played, the first year went undefeated at singles and posted one doubles win. Sayarath and senior Elise Marifian led Mount Holyoke to a 7-2 triumph over Smith College on Tuesday. It was the team's second straight win over the Pioneers and their first of the 2010-11 campaign. After combining for an 8-2 victory at number three doubles, both players prevailed in their respective singles matches. Sayarath was nearly unstoppable in her number six match, winning by a score of 6-0, 6-2. The first year was at it again on Thursday, when she cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 triumph at the number five singles position against Simmons College. She then closed out the week with a 6-3, 6-3 victory at the number four slot against MIT.

    The Mount Holyoke tennis team rolled to a convincing 9-0 triumph over Clark University this afternoon at the Field House. It was the Lyons 14th straight win over their NEWMAC counterparts. Senior Natalie Hsiang, senior Elise Marifian, first year Maya Sayarath and junior Sarah Moore each posted wins at both singles and doubles to lead the way.

    Mount Holyoke and Clark University face off in a NEWMAC contest Tuesday afternoon (4:00 p.m.) at the Tennis Courts. In 23 previous meetings between the programs, the Lyons have prevailed 22 times. They downed the Cougars for the 13th time in a row last fall, winning by a score of 3-0.
  • Tennis Falls to Unbeaten MIT, 7-2

    After taking all three doubles matches, the MIT tennis team held on for a 7-2 victory over NEWMAC foe Mount Holyoke this afternoon at the duPont Tennis Courts. First year Maya Sayarath picked up her fourth straight singles win to lead the way for the Lyons. Junior Sarah Moore was also victorious in her singles match.
