SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- Clark University got the only goal it needed 87 seconds into the game from Siobhan Lounsbury, and the visiting Cougars topped the Mount Holyoke College soccer team 1-0 Wednesday night at the MHC Soccer Field.

Lounsbury scored her team-high fifth goal of the season in the game's second minute, taking a cross from Isabelle Ramirez, battling a Mount Holyoke defender for the ball and sliding the ball under Lyons sophomore goalie Clarissa Govea (Pico Rivera, Calif.) for the game-opening goal.

Otherwise, the game was evenly played from end to end, with neither team able to generate many more scoring chances. Clark took 25 shots to Mount Holyoke's 11, but only 10 were put on goal to the Lyons' three.

Mount Holyoke's offensive efforts were continuously thwarted by a speedy and reactive Cougar defense, and Clark goalie Anabella White made three saves in the shutout.

Govea made nine saves in front of a similarly effective Mount Holyoke defense, keeping the Lyons a shot away from tying the game until the final minute.

Clark (8-3-4, 3-3-2 NEWMAC) is tied with Smith for fifth place in the NEWMAC, while Mount Holyoke (3-8-2, 1-7-0 NEWMAC) remains tied with Wheaton in 11th place.

Mount Holyoke will host Coast Guard on Saturday at 2pm, and will celebrate Senior Day. Clark will host Emerson Saturday at 1pm.
