CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The No. 11 nationally ranked MIT Engineers scored two goals in the opening 27 minutes and handed the Mount Holyoke College soccer team its first defeat of the season on Sunday afternoon, a 2-0 decision in the NEWMAC opener for both teams.

MIT (5-0-1, 1-0-0 NEWMAC) outshot Mount Holyoke (2-1-1, 0-1-0 NEWMAC) by a 28-5 margin, with the Lyons putting one shot on goal, by first-year forward Sage Hudson (Washington, D.C.) in the 33rd minute.

Sophomore goalkeeper Clarissa Govea (Pico Rivera, Calif.) had six saves for Mount Holyoke.

Meagan Rowlett struck first for MIT in the 13th minute, in the Engineers' fifth shot of the game and their first on goal.

MIT stayed on the attack and Govea turned away three shots before the hosts doubled their lead in the 27th minute, as Katherine Ruan tapped in a pass from Rowlett for the 2-0 edge.

A staunch defensive effort by the Lyons kept the game close, despite a 13-2 disadvantage in shots in the second half. MIT also had an 8-0 edge in corner kicks for the game.

The game was postponed a day due to Saturday's weather conditions.

Mount Holyoke returns immediately to action Monday night at 7pm, as the Lyons host Rhode Island College at the MHC Soccer Field.
