ECAC/NIRC Tabs 13 Lyons for Stewards' All-Academic Honors

 

WORCESTER, Mass. (June 21, 2013) - The Eastern College Athletic Conference National Invitational Rowing Championship Board of Stewards has released its selections for the 2013 Stewards' All-Academic Team and 13 Mount Holyoke College student-athletes have been named. To be honored, student-athletes must have reached sophomore academic standing and be a varsity letterwinner with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.35.

Representing the Lyons on this year's team were sophomore Hannah Arbach (Springfield, Va./Lake Braddock), sophomore Sarah Fleming (Elk Grove, Calif./Sacramento Country Day School), senior Claire Frilot (Scottsdale, Ariz.), sophomore Katelyn Joyal (Belmont, Mass./Belmont), senior Deanna Hart (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron), senior Atma Khalsa (Montague, Mass./Miri Piri Academy (India), junior Cara Murphy (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Shaker Heights), junior Michelle Olguin (Flagstaff, Ariz./Flagstaff Arts), senior Anne Preston (South Hampton, N.H./Phillips Exeter Academy), senior Fan-Jean Liu (Stockton, Calif./Lincoln), sophomore Emily Loughlin (Ossining, N.Y./Ossining), sophomore Rachael Smith (Berwick, Maine/Noble) and sophomore Helena Walker (Boulder, Colo./Idyllwild Arts Academy).

During the 2012-13 campaign, the Lyons crew team, under the direction of head coach Jeanne Friedman, had a number of solid outings. The varsity eight finished sixth at the NEWMAC Championships, while placing 14th at the National Invitational Rowing Championships. The squad closed out the year with a 17th-place showing at the ECAC Championships.

Individually, a number of student-athletes were recognized during the season, including Arbach, who was an All-NEWMAC Varsity selection and also a member of the 2013 All-ECAC NIRC Rowing Team. Murphy was also named to the All-NEWMAC Varsity Team, while Hart, Khalsa and Preston were also Seven Sisters Scholar Athlete selections.
