HARTFORD, Conn. (Sept. 30, 2012) - The Mount Holyoke College crew team kicked off its 2012-13 season at the Head of the Riverfront Regatta on Sunday. A total of six boats competed for the Lyons on the Connecticut River in Hartford, Connecticut.
Mount Holyoke entrants posted fifth or better in four of its races.
The Lyons top varsity eight boat finished just off the pace set by Trinity College in the first college eight division. Its time of 17:43.15 was good for fourth place overall and put it in front of New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) rival Coast Guard Academy. Mount Holyoke's second varsity eight boat also took part in the race, finishing in eighth with a time of 18:33.15.
Mount Holyoke's third varsity eight boat, which competed later in the day, finished fourth in its race, crossing the line with a time of 17:37.75. It was a great effort by the 3V8 team, which saw two first year rowers (Maryellen Larken and Gabriel Chevalier) step in as the squad faced a bout of illness prior to the start. The boat's quicker time was also aided by changing water conditions.
Meanwhile, the Lyons novice four boat , the newly christened 'Laurie Priest', won gold medals honors in its race with a time of 21:23.19. The boat was led by coxswain Jenna Parks.
In the varsity four boat final, the Lyons 'A' team finished fifth overall with a time of 17:11.90 to edge out NEWMAC-foe Coast Guard once again, while the 'B' boat was eighth with a mark of 18:13.55, also edging out Coast Guard's 'B' boat.
The Lyons are back in the water on October 13, when they compete in the Quinsigamond Snake Regatta, hosted on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass., at 10am.
