SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. - Six different players scored, including a game-high six tallies from junior attack Emily Young, to lead the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to a 20-16 victory over Mount Holyoke College. With the victory, the Engineers even their record at 6-6 and improve to 3-2 in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC). The Lyons slip to 3-10 and 1-5 in conference play.
A wild first half saw the visitors head into the intermission with an 11-10 advantage. Young (La Jolla, Calif./La Jolla), who had scored with one second remaining in the opening stanza, carried that momentum into the second frame as she fired one past MHC keeper Mia Wysocki (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) less than a minute in.
Junior midfielder Ashely Masucci (Windham, N.H./Central Catholic) then converted a pass from senior middie Hannah Levy (Yardley, Pa./Princeton Day School) to give MIT the 13-10 lead at 28:31.
Mount Holyoke was able to answer over the next eight minutes as senior attack Charlotte Wagner (West Chester, Pa./Westtown School) put her third of the contest past junior goalie Eva Boal (Princeton Junction, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro), followed by junior midfielder Kaitlin Braz (Tolland, Conn./East Catholic), who also netted her third goal with 21:51 on the clock.
Despite the burst of momentum, the visitors quickly countered with a 5-0 run. Junior defender Jack Simmons (Houston, Texas/St. Johns School) got things going with a free position goal at 20:45, and scores from Masucci, first year Rayna Higuchi (Solana Beach, Calif./Canyon Crest Academy), Levy and Young bolstered MIT's advantage to 18-12 with 10:43 remaining.
Braz found the back of the net less than a minute later to pull the Lyons back to within five, and a free position score from junior midfielder Leila Kouakou (Leeds, Mass./Northampton) curled the deficit to four (18-14) with just over eight minutes to go.
MIT saw Levy and Young add to their totals, putting the Engineers up by a 20-14 margin, but MHC tacked on the final goals of the game as Braz netted her fifth, before assisting on first year attacker Mary LaVigne's (New Milford, Conn./Canterbury School) second of the contest.
In addition to her game-high six goals, Young also added two groung balls and a caused turnover. Levy posted five goals, an assist, a ground ball and a caused turnover, while Higuchi chipped in with four goals and four draw controls. Masucci also had an outstanding day, posting three goals and an assist to go along with two ground balls, a game-best seven draw controls and a game-high three caused turnovers.
For the Lyons, Braz posted five goals with three ground balls, a draw control and a caused turnover. Kouakou added four goals and a team-best five draw controls, while Wagner posted three goals. First year midfielder Julianna Rankin (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) had a game-best five ground balls with a goal, an assist, three draw controls and two caused turnovers, while defensively, junior captain Julia Lankin (West Hartford, Conn./Conard) had two ground balls and three draw controls.
In goal, Boal posted five saves in the victory for MIT, while senior Isa Rodriguez (Columbus, Ohio/Westerville School) shouldered the loss for the Lyons. She stopped one shot in the opening half of action. Wysocki came on in relief in the second half, posting eight saves.
Overall, MIT held a 33-25 advantage in shots for the game, in addition to a 21-13 edge in ground balls. The Engineers also owned a 21-17 margin in draw controls, while going 11-17 on the clear. Mount Holyoke was 13-19 on the clear for the contest.
Both teams are back in action on Tuesday as Mount Holyoke hosts Connecticut College (6:30pm), while MIT welcomes NEWMAC-rival Wheaton (7pm).
