Lacrosse Drops Nail Biter at Skidmore

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (Apr. 3, 2012) – The Mount Holyoke College lacrosse team came up just short in its 9-8 setback to Skidmore College this evening at Wachenheim Field.  Sophomore attacker Liz Randolph set the tone for the Lyons with four points on two goals and a pair of assists.

Liz Randolph After falling behind for the first time, Mount Holyoke used back-to-back goals from Randolph and classmate Brianne Phelan to gain an 8-7 advantage with just under nine minutes remaining in regulation.

From there, it was all Skidmore. Junior attacker Lexi Melville knotted things up with 8:21 to go, and senior defender Leslie Stebbins found the back of the net for what proved to be the winner at the 2:05 mark.

Phelan and sophomore Naomi Miller finished with two goals apiece. Meanwhile, first year midfielder Kirsten Kilburn chipped in with a goal and an assist. Mount Holyoke's remaining strike came from junior attacker Molly Macdonald. On the defensive end, sophomore Annabel Barrett collected three caused turnovers.

Stebbins recorded four goals to pace Skidmore. The Thoroughbreds also received a boost from Melville, who delivered a hat trick. First year midfielder Laura Ferzoco added a pair of tallies.

Skidmore (6-2, 1-1 NEWMAC) finished with advantages in shots (23-17), ground balls (21-18) and draw controls (14-5).

Senior Rachel Klein went the distance between the pipes for the hosts, stopping five shots. Meanwhile, junior Liz Malenfant came up with seven saves for the Lyons.

Mount Holyoke (5-4, 1-1 NEWMAC) will resume its NEWMAC slate at Wheaton College on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
