Rowing Takes Fourth At 32nd Annual Seven Sisters Championship

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Wellesley College crew team won two of three races to win the 32nd Annual Seven Sisters Championship for the eighth year in a row this morning on the Charles River in Cambridge, Mass.

In addition to Wellesley, the race featured Bryn Mawr College, Mount Holyoke College, Smith College and host Simmons College and spanned three and a half kilometers from the Massachusetts Avenue Bridge through the Boston University Bridge, the Riverside Boathouse of host Simmons and finished just short of the John W. Weeks Bridge.

The Blue totaled 36 points, fueled by victories in both Novice races and the Second Varsity trek, to finish 11 points ahead of Smith. The Pioneers' second-place overall showing was buoyed by their win the first varsity eight event. Simmons placed third with 21 points, while Mount Holyoke scored 16 points and Bryn Mawr earned nine points on the day.

Wellesley and Mount Holyoke were the only two schools to score in the Second Novice Eight race with the Blue turning in a time of 15:01.1 to earn seven points, while the Lyons picked up five points with a mark of 15:13.9.

Wellesley added to its lead with nine points on a first place showing in the First Novice Eight race, fueled by a time of 13:31.6. The Simmons Novice Eight finished just over 22 seconds later at 13:53.8 for a second-place finish and a seven-point pick-up. Smith and Mount Holyoke finished within two seconds of each other with Smith clocking in at 14:02.5 for five points ahead of Mount Holyoke's mark of 14:04.1, which garnered three points.

Wellesley's Second Varsity Eight continued the winning trend for the Blue, taking the race with a time of 12:53.9 to outpace Smith, which placed second on a time of 13:18.1. Wellesley scored 10 points with the win, while Smith took eight points. Simmons followed with a time of 13:29.7 to finish third for six points and Bryn Mawr placed fourth with a time of 15:01.5 to collect four points.

Smith (12:25.5) finished the morning with a first-place finish in the First Varsity Eight event, edging Wellesley (12:27.0) by just a second and a half to take 12 points to the Blue's 10-point take. Simmons placed third with a time of 13:04.5 to score eight points with Mount Holyoke coming in just over three seconds later to earn six points on a mark of 13:07.7. Bryn Mawr closed out the day with a time of 13:28.6 to score four points with a fifth place finish.

The Mount Holyoke Rowing team will now be idle until the start of the spring season.
