Basketball Suffers NEWMAC Loss at Springfield

Springfield, Mass. - (Feb. 13, 2013) - The Springfield College women's basketball team put together a complete effort to power past visiting Mount Holyoke College, 55-38, on Wednesday evening Blake Arena. With the win, the Pride snapped its six-game slide to improve to 4-19, 2-15 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play. The Lyons fall to 5-17, 3-14.

Springfield had several strong performances, led by Heather Lewis, who tallied a game-high 16 points to go along with six boards. Classmate Emily Taylor added 12 points and five rebounds off the bench and Tamara Tribble continued her consistent play with eight points and 10 caroms.

For the visitors, both Angelica Pascual and Amber Legare registered 14 points in the loss. Legare hauled in a game-high 12 boards, while Kate Karraker posted six points and three steals.

Springfield benefited from its suffocating defense in the first 20 minutes of play, limiting the Lyons to just five field goals and 13 points. After Legare connected inside to make it a 14-13 game with 5:10 to go in the half, Springfield poured on a 10-0 run to close stanza en route to an 11-point halftime cushion. Jaimie Bickelhaupt was key in the spurt, chipping in five points.

As a team, the Pride score 18 points of Mount Holyoke turnovers and led by as many as 21 in the contest.

Springfield will wrap up its season on Saturday when it hosts nationally-ranked Babson at 1:00 pm. Mount Holyoke also concludes its regular season on Saturday when it travels to Wheaton for a 12pm game.
