Worcester, Mass. (Jan. 10, 2013) - Theresa Logan (Southboro, MA) and Dani Davis (East Granby, CT) each registered double-doubles to lift WPI to a 67-54 triumph over Mount Holyoke in a NEWMAC women's basketball contest played on Thursday evening.
The Engineers, winners of three straight and six of its last seven, improves to 9-4 on the season and 5-2 in conference play. Mount Holyoke slips to 3-9 overall and 1-6 in NEWMAC action.
One of three Engineers to post double-digits, Logan notched 21 points and hauled in a game-high 12 boards for her second double-double of the season and seventh of her career. Davis added 14 points and collected 10 rebounds for the home team.
Point guard Rachel Pineda (Shrewsbury, MA) scored all of her 11 points in the first half and ended the night with five assists and four steals. She did not commit a turnover. Kelly Morgan (Brookline, NH) and Cindy Chelius (Northfield, NJ) combined for 12 points and added three and two assists respectively.
The Engineers as a team committed a season-low six turnovers and shot a nifty 84.6% from the free throw line.
Sophomore forward Amber Legare (Chicopee, MA) led the Lyons with a double-double including a career and game-high 22 points and 10 boards while recording four blocks. Senior guard Angelica Pascual (Lawrence, MA) added 11 points for Mount Holyoke and dished out three assists. First year guard Genelle Green (Windsor, CT) pulled down six rebounds and added eight points on the night.
A back-and-forth battle to start the game, the teams traded leads seven times in the first 12 minutes. However, two quick baskets in the 13th minute from Logan put the Crimson and Gray out in front and they were able to maintain the lead for the rest of the contest.
A Siena Mamayek (Melrose, MA) jumper sparked a 9-2 run in the closing minutes of the first half and Pineda converted a 4-point play in the waning seconds of the first stanza to give the Engineers a 35-22 half time advantage.
Pineda led the way in the first half, while Logan added ten and pulled down seven rebounds in the opening period. WPI took advantage of Mount Holyoke's seven turnovers converting them for eight points, while the Engineers only gave the ball away once.
The entire second half was played within an eight-point window with WPI's lead reaching 14 on two occasions and the Lyons whittling the margin down to six at one point.
The Engineers now hit the road for three straight, starting Saturday at Wellesley at 2pm. Mount Holyoke is in action the same day, hosting Coast Guard at 1pm.
