Following the lead of longtime head coach Andy Whitcomb, the Mount Holyoke field hockey team advanced to the Semifinal Round of the NEWMAC Tournament for the first time since the 2005 season. After upsetting third seeded Clark University 2-0 in the Quarterfinal Round, the Lyons were topped 2-0 by second seeded MIT in the Semifinals. They have qualified for the postseason in each of Whitcomb's 11 seasons.

Mount Holyoke exploded out of the gate, notching victories in four of its first five contests. In the midst of that run, the Lyons posted a perfect 2-0 mark at the 25^th Seven Sisters Classic at Bryn Mawr College. Following a 4-0 victory over the host Owls, downed Wilson College 2-0. At the conclusion of the tournament, sophomore defender Tricia Chase and senior forward Katelyn Frick were named to the All-Classic Team.

After suffering three straight setbacks, Mount Holyoke piled up five wins in its next six outings. The Lyons got things going with a dramatic 2-1 overtime win at Smith College. They fell in a shootout to WPI but regrouped to claim consecutive victories over Springfield College (2-1 OT), Babson College (2-0), Hendrix College (3-0) and Clark (3-2). They dropped their final two regular season contests.

Chase was Mount Holyoke's most complete player throughout the season. In addition to collecting nine points on two goals and five assists, she finished among the NEWMAC leaders in defensive saves with eight. The defender was named to the NFHCA New England East Region First Team as well as the NEWMAC All-Conference First Team. As a result of her outstanding play during the week of October 12-18, she earned both NEWMAC Player of the Week and ECAC Division III New England Defensive Player of the Week accolades and was named to the womensfieldhockey.com national honor roll.

Fellow sophomore Shara Robertson paced the Lyons on the offensive end, pouring in team highs of 25 points and 12 goals. Five of the forward's tallies went down as match winners. She was voted to the NFHCA New England East Region Second Team and the NEWMAC All-Conference Second Team. Mount Holyoke also received solid production from sophomore midfielder Taylor Hedges, who collected three assists while serving as the team's table setter from the midfield position. She joined Robertson on the NEWMAC All-Conference Second Team.

The 2009 NCAA Division III Field Hockey National Championship took place at Mount Holyoke from November 21-22. Salisbury College, Messiah College, Tufts University and Ursinus College participated in the event, which drew record crowds. Prior to the Championship, the NFHCA Division III Senior All-Star Game took place at the Turf Field. Senior forward Mary Kate Switchenko played in front of her home crowd. She registered six goals and two assists in 2009.
