THE MATCHUP: Mount Holyoke and Clark University face off in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest Tuesday afternoon (4:00 p.m.) at the Mount Holyoke Tennis Courts. THE LYONS: Mount Holyoke (1-5, 1-3 NEWMAC) has dropped five of its first six matches to begin the season. Led by Maya Sayarath and Elise Marifian, the Lyons rolled to a 7-2 victory over longtime rival Smith College last Tuesday. After combining for a victory at number three doubles, both players prevailed in their respective singles matches. Sayarath has exploded out of the gate, winning five of her first six singles contests. Over the past two weeks, she has accumulated four straight triumphs. In addition to their win over Smith, Sayarath and Marifian came out on top at third doubles against Wellesley College. Nahrhee Han and Sarah Moore have contributed a pair of singles wins. Meanwhile, Moore and Natalie Hsiang have teamed up for two wins at number one doubles.
THE COUGARS: Clark (3-4, 0-3 NEWMAC) has dropped two straight matches after beginning the season with an overall record of 3-2. The Cougars have gone winless in NEWMAC play. Their wins have come against Becker College (7-2), Emmanuel College (6-3) and Anna Maria College (9-0). In their most recent outing on Saturday, they were downed 7-2 by Wellesley College. Gaby Suriano has gone 5-1 at number one singles to lead the way for Clark. The Cougars have also received solid production from Julia Bergeron, Kristen Cullity, Emily Schweitzer and Maggie Swann, who have collected two singles wins apiece. On the doubles side, Bergeron and Schweitzer have teamed up to post an overall mark of 3-2. Two of their triumphs have come at the number two slot, while the other came at the number one position.
NEXT UP: Both squads are slated to take the courts again on Saturday. Mount Holyoke will host Wheaton College at 1:00 p.m., while Clark will visit Babson College for a match beginning at 10:00 a.m.
