Engell Pushes Cross Country to Eighth Place at NEWMAC Championship

Rebecca Engell PAXTON, Mass. (Oct. 30, 2010) – The Mount Holyoke College women's cross country team took eighth place at the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship today at Moore State Park in Paxton, Mass. Leading the way for the Lyons was senior Rebecca Engell, who took home 22nd place with a time of 19:55.42.

In addition to Engell, the Lyons also received a boost from first year Lucia Garcia, who grabbed 41st place with her time of 20:42.44. Sophomore Elizabeth MacLauchlan was next in 66th place. She recorded a time of 21:38.27.

Five runners finished in the top eight for the MIT, which totaled just 24 points en route to its fourth straight NEWMAC title and seventh overall. The Engineers were followed by Wellesley College (31), Smith College (121), Springfield College (136), the Coast Guard Academy (136), Babson College (152), WPI (180), Mount Holyoke (203), host Clark University (231) and Wheaton College (274).

Wellesley's Randelle Boots completed the 5,000-meter course in 18:25.35 to capture Runner of the Year honors. Meanwhile, MIT's Martina de Geus crossed the line in 19:03.75 to secure the Rookie of the Year award. She finished seventh overall.

The Lyons will wrap up their 2010 slate on Saturday, November 13, when they compete in the NCAA Division III New England Regional Championship at Mount Greylock High School in Williamstown, Mass.
